- Oral history passed down through the Rainy River branch of Craigens (Osters?)
Ellen was previously married to a man named Thomas Culhane before her marriage to Patrick Craigen, and had two daughters and one son by Culhane. (*name appears to have been JOHN Culhane, not Thomas*)
This might explain why Ellen appears to have been a couple of years older than Patrick Craigen. John Craigen of Rainy River, when filling out his father Dennis Craigen's death certificate, said Dennis' mother's maiden name was Ellen Culhane, not O'Neil.
However, no trace of any such Culhanes have been uncovered by this author in Ontario or in Oregon Territory, where said children are believed to have moved very early (1840s-1850s). However, in later generations (1890s say), people from families in Lennox & Addington County, including extended family of the Craigens, did move to Oregon and Washington State for logging jobs.
In the parish registers for Ballylongford, there is a John Culhane and Ellen Neil couple, the following three entries are probably the two girls and one son referenced in the oral history:
Margaret Culhane born at Leanamore in 1831; Catherine Culhane born at Leanamore 1833, and Patrick Collins [sic?] born at Ballylongford, 1836 (his bap. sponsors were Dermot Kennelly and Mary Kennelly).
