"Driver-by a young man 24 y.o. as driver express or delivery wagon or any steady employment. 1st class reference. Address Thomas C. Rothwell, No 94 High Street, Bklyn."

Married to Gerda Theresa Ljungqvist by Nicholas Bjerring. Rev. Bjerring was a Danish-American Roman Catholic Priest who was later ordained a Russian Orthodox Priest; he started the first Russian Orthodox chapel/parish out of his home (2nd Avenue and 53rd) in New York City, which closed in 1883 due to lack of support from Russia and low attendance. He then became a Presbyterian. In an 1891 newspaper article about a Republican party meeting at Cooper Union at which Rev. Bjerring spoke, he is referred to as "of the German Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer" ("Loyal Colored Electors," New York Tribune, October 20, 1891, p. 1).

"Flirtation Caused Collision. Mrs. Rothwell wants $20,000 for Hurts-Blames Smitten Motorman.
If the motorman of a Nassau trolley car had not been smitten with the charms of a pretty passenger, Mrs. Gerda T. Rothwell would not now be suing the railroad company for $20,000 damages. According to her story, she was a passenger on one of the company's cars on July 8, 1897, and another passenger was a pretty young woman who sat on the front seat and seemed to engross the motorman's entire attention. The attention of the entire car was centered upon the flirtation, until there was a sudden crash and bang, and Mrs. Rockwell [sic] was thrown down so violently that she sustained permanent injuries. Mrs. Bertha Anderson, another passenger, testified that the flirtation was one of the most idyllic affairs she had ever seen. It made the passengers oblivious to everything but the progress of love's young dream. The girl, she said, was very pretty, and looked like an Armenian. Mrs. Rockwell [sic] was very pale and spoke with difficulty. While testifying she fainted, and it was half an hour before she was able to leave the courtroom."

"Company Admits Negligence. Thomas C. Rothwell's Action Against the Nassau Line for the Loss of His Wife's Services.
Trial of the action brought by Thomas C. Rothwell, a letter carrier attached to the post office in Brooklyn and living at 23 Trautman [sic] street, to recover $20,000 from the Nassau line, defendant, was begun this morning before Justice Martin J. Keough and a jury in part III of the Supreme Court. The suit is brought for loss of the services of the plaintiff's wife, Gerda T. Rothwell, who was injured in a collision of a car of the defendant road with another car, at Twenty-fifth avenue, called Nassau crossing on July 28, 1897. The plaintiff, his wife and their children were on an outing to Coney Island. It is alleged in the complaint that the motorman on the car in which the Rothwell family were riding was talking to an Armenian woman on the front seat, instead of attending to his business, when a car ahead stopped. The motorman put on the brakes but it was too late and there was a collision in which many passengers were thrown out. Mrs. Rothwell was severely hurt and after the accident developed serious troubles from internal injuries. The defendant does not deny that there was negligence and the question before the jury is as to the amount of damages sustained, and for which the defendant is liable. In a former action brought by Mrs. Rothwell against the Nassau Line to recover $ 50,000 for her injuries she recovered $ 500 in the verdict by the jury. Magner & Hughes appeared for the plaintiff and Stephen H. Baldwin for the defendant. The case was continued."
