Deceased Name DAVID DUNFORD, ATTORNEY, DIES AT 70

David Dunford, a Modesto attorney for more than 40 years, has died here. He was 70.

In Stanislaus County, he served in the county counsel's office from 1954 until 1966, with a brief stint in the district attorney's office in 1957.

He once told a reporter that he decided to become an attorney at the age of 11, when he accompanied his father, a water district superintendent, to the district counsel's office in San Francisco. "The office had thick carpets like I had never seen, and the windows overlooked the Bay. I decided then I wanted to be a lawyer. It was the wrong reason, but the right choice."

After his county service, he went into a legal partnership with Robert Elledge in 1966 and in 1985 formed the firm of Dunford, Grisez and Orestein. Born and raised in San Jose, he served with the U.S. Army's 10th Infantry in the European Theater from 1944 to 1946 and earned several decorations, including the Bronze Star.

He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his law degree from Harvard Law School.

Two of his five children, David and Phillips, III, preceded him in death. Survivors include sons William of Colorado and James of Oakland; daughter Dorothy Howard of Poway; brother Dr. Phillips Dunford Jr. of Bakersfield; and sister Marie York of La Jolla.

A memorial service was held at the Chapel of the Chimes for Mr. Dunford, who died Jan. 15. Burial of his cremated remains is pending at a veterans' cemetery. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 1524 McHenry Ave., Modesto 95350.
