      Joseph was a member of the Sons of St. George, Anglo-Saxon Lodge. He held leadership positions. His brother W.G. was at one point also a member, however Joseph was the one heavily involved in this activity. The social activities of the club were frequently reported in the local newspapers.

      "American Machinist" August 31, 1905, p. 301 "Joseph A. Rothwell has been appointed superintendent of the Pioneer Iron Works, Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Rothwell has been connected with these works for seventeen years, entering them as a toolmaker, from which position he has, by his merits and ability, risen to his present position. In the positions of responsibility he has previously occupied in the works, his influence seems to have been for the good of both the men and the proprietors, the conditions of employment having been improved, while at the same time the best interests of the establishment have been thoroughly looked after. Mr. Rothwell has invented a number of devices of great use in facilitating the work, one of his ideas having been illustrated in our columns at page 161, Part I, of the present volume, a device for cutting internal and external spirals on the planer."
