To the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of Trade
The humble petition of the Merchants of Bideford, in the County of Devon, trading to Newfoundland
Humbly showeth,
That for many years past your petitioners have sent from this port 40 to 50 ships yearly in a fishing voyage to Ferryland and the parts adjacent in Newfoundland, to the great advantage of Her Majesty's revenue, bringing up thereby a numerous company of seamen for the Queen's service [and to] the great benefit of the country by taking of their provisions.....signed John Marke.... [et al]"

(Until my son John Pollard turns twenty one, I devise my "trusty and well beloved" friends "Master John Markes the elder and Master Richard Giles the elder both of Bideford merchants" to manage business affairs for my son John and also to be my executors...witnessed by William Curtis Jr, John Marks Jr. etc.

"Timothy Lang junior became a potter, as did Thomas Beale IV....John Marks junior became a merchant like his father. These three shared the Beale inheritance after the deaths of Thomas III in 1679, and Gabriel ten years later....In the eighteenth century John Marks junior and the descendants of the Vernams continued as potters' landlords but the dynasty of gentlemen potters who not only owned potteries but ran them, passed away"

to my son John MARKS tenement called Ashridge on the parish "Rudge of Queth" [huh? handwriting uncertain] and tenement called Stamridge in the parish of Bideford in the possession of Mr George STRANGE and the fifth part of manor of Meshaw/Meshett. to my Son Thomas MARKS Lewshill in Bideford also house which I purchased of Mr John BUCK leading to Bouden Green and moiety of two pieces of Land on west Land of Bideford purchased of Prudence KING of Northam, also my right in the house which Thomas BEALE lived in in Mill Street also one fifth part of manor of Meshaw/Meshett. To my son George MARKS my two pieces of land called North Downe and Britons Well in North downe, Bideford; also my right in the tenement of Sessacott in West Putford and one fifth part of manor of Meshaw/Meshett. To my son Samuel MARKS the house I purchased of Timothy LANGE and Mary PHILLIPS in Bideford, also the houses in possession of Nicholas BANNETT? Jane NUTT; William LOCK?; Tamzine SUSSICKS and Solomon WILLS in Bideford, and burgage of land leading to Weston in Bideford heretofore William VERNAMS and moiety of burgage of land leading to Bowden Green in possession of William PITTS and and three pieces of land called Handey Cross and Berkaborow in Bideford now in the possession of Grace PEIRS? and Susanna BESLEY, and my right in the house etc leading to Westome in Bideford formerly Thomas BEALES and one fifth of manor of Meshaw/Meshett. To my daughter Elizabeth MARKS Orchard and East Langdon in Abbotsham, and one fifth of manor of Meshaw 18 January 1720, witnesses William TALLAMY, Richard MAINE, John NASH.

Marks), John Power, James Smith.: Liabilities of John Smith, late of Bideford, merchant, who is said to have carried on a considerable trade to Virginia, in America, in the tobacco trade. Touching bonds given by him to the Custom House at Bideford as security for the payment of duties on tobacco, &c., &c.
