  • Notes
    • Joseph Craig was born at "Nether House" according to the baptism at the chapelry of Ninebanks (see FHL Film # 252, 526) [Nether Houses]

      See notes for James Stokoe.

1841 Census, Parish of Allendale, West Allen Low Div. 4 pt 2

      John Craig, 25, carrier, Nth.

      Mary Brown, 55, F.S., Nth.

The marriage registration/marriage record of Joseph Craig and Elizabeth Hetherington has yet to be located. Possibly they were married by a Methodist minister who neglected to register the marriage, perhaps this same person married Joseph's sister Elizabeth Craig to Thomas Whitfield ca. 1838.

Joseph Craig and Elizabeth Hetherington are probably the Joseph Craig (signs) and Elizabeth Craig (makes her mark) who witnessed the June 9, 1842 Ninebanks marriage of widower Matthew Armstrong of Hartley Clough (son of John) to Mary Hetherington of Whiteley Shield (daughter of Thomas) according to the marriage registration (see FHL Film # 252, 526). Mary Hetherington was the daughter of Thomas Hetherington and Jane Bell who married 13 May 1818 at Allendale. On the 1841 Census, Thomas is 45 and Jane, 40.

Joseph Craig's first child Mary Ann Craig was born at Chapel Lodge in November of 1842 according to the registration of her birth. John Craig, Joseph's brother, John, was living at Chapel Lodge when he was married to Ann Ridley in May of 1842, according to the registration of the Craig-Ridley marriage.

In the August 17, 1848 baptism records at Ninebanks of Joseph's daughters Hannah and Elizabeth, Joseph is referred to as a "miner." (FHL Film # 252, 526) These are the only baptisms that have been located of Joseph's children.

There was a major lead miner's strike in Allendale in 1849, the year Joseph Craig permanently changed occupations from lead miner to carrier. He may have somehow been involved in the strike. In Newcastle he was a provisions dealer. The marriage registrations of his children also (posthumously) provide additional occupations: "farmer" (Mary Ann's second marriage) and "engineer" (Sarah); "shopman" (John) is presumably a synonym for "provisions shop". The death certificate indicates only that Joseph Craig was a laborer, age 43. Informant, J. Craig. He died at Water Street in Elswick, Westgate Subdistrict (Newcastle reg dist, March Q 1862 10b16)
