  • Notes
    • born out of wedlock to Isabella Stokoe.
James Stokoe birth Mar Q 1841 Hexham 25/293
James was baptized at Carr Shield March 27, 1842 "son of Joseph Craig, miner of Ninebanks and Isabella Stokoe of Wellhope"
James lived exclusively with his mother's family and used his mother's surname.
James and his mother Isabella are living at Wellhope with Isabella's father, James Stokoe, on the 1841 Census.
Isabella Stokoe seems to have had another child out of wedlock around 1845 named William McGee or Gee. (see below)
Isabella Stokoe was married to Joseph Whitfield in 1846.
On the 1851 Census, Isabella is living at Wellhope with her husband Joseph, age 32, lead ore miner, and two children Mary and William Whitfield, by Joseph, and also Thomas [sic] Stokoe, age 10, and William McGee, age 5.
On the 1861 Census, the couple is still at Wellhope, and James Stokoe and William Gee are still living with their mother and stepfather.
