  • Notes
    • Cape Breton County deed bk B p 334 FHL Film 808,746
      registered 14 May 1800
      dated 16 May 1798
"Twenty days after sight I promise to pay to Thos Lee the Sum of Twenty Pounds Halifax Currency with Lawful Interest for the Same as witness my hand the day and date above written- signed Peter Mc Nab"
"nothing changed being a poor soldier"

Who inherited Thomas Ley's land ("the estate at Lingan") mentioned in his father Alexander Ley's will? Did Thomas ever get title to said "estate"?

Who are Thomas Ley's children? Mary Laffin/Hanrahan, Bridget Cathcart, Anne Roach and Alexander Ley are most likely children of Thomas Ley (born 1741), because they lived at Lingan (where Thomas Ley probably lived) clustered around each other, and their descendants act as sponsors of each other's baptisms and witnesses to burials, marriages, and land sales and probate proceedings. These are the only Leys/Lees who are known to have lived at Lingan (a location later known as Bridgeport). Although Alexander Ley (born ca. 1791) owned land in Main a Dieu, this seems to be for income rather than a residence.

According to Patterson's History of Victoria County, a "Thos. Ley" was among the signers of a 25 June 1811 petition of Baddeck inhabitants desirous of a grist mill, addressed to the commissioners of revenue for Cape Breton. (To be investigated)
