  • Notes
    • "The Tom Guina Family by Joe Guina. Thomas Guina was born in Tweed, Ontario. He spent his early years working in logging camps. Like so many of his family, he came west and settled amongst them about 1908. He did not homestead but bought script land and settled on the NW1/4 of 30-40-9W3rd. Tom built a one room bachelor shack and lived there for several years. His sister, Sarah, came to live with him after her husband died. This was about 1917 at which time he built a two-storey addition. After a few years Sarah passed away and was buried back east beside her husband. Teresa Slater became the bride of Tom on October 24, 1922. She was born March 11, 1885, in Great Harwood, England. Adjusting to farm life certainly had its hard times, but soon to arrive were three children-Margaret, Joseph and Eileen. The children attended Twin Lakes School. Unfortunately, just after Eileen had started to school she received a fatal kick from a horse, and was killed instantly. She was buried at Radisson in the Roman Catholic cemetery. Not long after, Tom took a serious stroke which left him paralysed from the waist down. Teresa looked after him as best she could. Eventually he had to be hospitalized, and later passed away in North Battleford. Teresa was left with two children and a farm to manage. With the help of a hired man, John Seerey, the farm was worked until Joe was 16 and took it over. Teresa remained on the farm with Joe until he married. Then she moved to Saskatoon and lived with her daughter, Margaret, until her death on June 25, 1971..." (from "Reflections of Radisson")
