  • Notes
    • On a website extant many years ago, a printout of which exists in the possession of the author, claims were made that Jean George Bouteillier was "born 19 August 1691 in Etobon, Montbeliard. Christen [sic] 16 August 1692 in Etobon, Montbeliard...his godfather was Jean George Barot [sic], represented by Christopher Blancon [sic], and his godmother was Catherine Bouteillier, daughter of Lazare Bouteillier." Author has not located this baptism record, but judging from the following census records, the birthdate cannot be too far off

      1717 census, village of Etobon
Jean Georges Bouteiller is 23, living with his mother Jeanne Mignerey (head of household), age 66, and unmarried sisters Catherine, age 27, and Jeanne, age 37. The family owns a cow.

      1718 census, village of Etobon
Jean George Bouteiller is 27, a "coupeur," [logger] living with his mother Jeanne Mignerey, 74, and unmarried sisters Catherine, age 30, and Jeanne, age 35.

      1727 census, village of Etobon
      Jean George Bouteillier, age 35
      Sara Grange age 25
      Catherine [Bouteillier] age 3
(all of the above are Lutheran in faith)

A 1752 "emigration permit" (W.P. Bell's phrase) in which Jean George Bouteiller of Etobon testifies to his poverty, Lutheranism, and desire to emigrate to the British colonies was passed down through his descendants [chain of title to be determined]; the text can be read at [http://www.geocities.com/kingboutilier/docu.html]. Witnesses listed on the document appear to all be close relatives, who are signing in support of his character: Jean Bouttaillie Ech...?[Echivan? Etobon? or an occupation?], Jean George Bouteillie ["taillandier"-J-G's nephew] Jaques Goud, Pierre Goud, Jean Christofle petit Hory, Pierre Plançon, Victoire Bugnon [Victor Emmanuel Bugnon], Jean Nicolas Mignerai, maire, and Daniel Goud, ancien.

Some of Jean George's teenage sons-Jean Nicolas and Jean George definitely-are not included in Jean George's "family of a wife and four children" named on the passport, the four children presumably being Catherine, Jacques, Jeanne, and George Friderich although Jacques was old enough to be considered a "full freight" passenger on the "Sally."

"Sally" passenger list, 30 May 1752, includes four Boutilier heads of household- Jean George Bouteillier (occupation-married), Jacques Bouteillier (farmer-single), Jean Nicolas Bouteillier (farmer-single), and also another Jacques, age "33", weaver, on the ship-relationship to the first three not known-apparently of no close relationship.
