  • Notes
    • The cooper Samuel Otto Ljungqvist, a native of Östergötland province, Sweden, whose ancestors had lived around the place where he was born for centuries, working as crofters, farmhands, smiths, shoemakers, etc. was married in 1865 in Stockholm to Carolina Sofia Nordström, a native of Kopparberg (Dalarna) Sverige, whose ancestors had lived in that part of Sweden for centuries; many of her ancestors were "bergsmen" or miners; ("Kopparberg" means "copper mountain"). So, Samuel Otto Ljungqvist emigrated to New York in 1869 and his wife followed the next year with their two daughters, Gerda Theresa and Emma Sofia, both born in Stockholm. A third daughter, Jennie Octavia, was born in New York.

Samuel Otto was usually known as "Otto" in the US. The family name was often approximated as "Yonkers" in many US records related to the family, even though there is no etymological connection whatsoever between the Dutch/German name and New York place name "Yonkers" (Junker- a landed social class), and the Swedish ornamental surname "Ljungquist" (meaning heather sprig).

The probable reason for the "Yonkers" alias is similarity of sound and convenience, as "Yonkers" was easier for Americans, particularly the German-Americans who made up a large part of New York's population in the late 1800s, to pronounce and spell, than the tongue-twisting, unfamiliar and unphonetic Swedish "Ljungquist." However, there was also a Yonkers Barrel Company at Cherry Street close to where the Ljungqvist family lived and where Samuel Otto Ljungqvist may well have worked, which could have influenced his alias. (Yonkers Barrel Co. burned down on February 22, 1883 acc. to the following day's New York Times)

The following bizarre note appeared in the social news section of the upstate New York paper the "Catskill Recorder" on November 22, 1895, following the wedding of Jennie Ljungqvist to John A. Anderson two days previous:
"The surname of a woman married at New York the other day was Ljungqvist. Who can blame her for wanting to change it?"

Gerda Theresa Ljungqvist married Englishman Thomas Charles Rothwell (after a brief, mysterious marriage to a fellow Swede) and had six surviving children, four daughters, two sons. The family lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Jennie Ljungqvist married electrician Johan Andersson (John Anderson) and had two sons and later moved from Brooklyn to the Bronx. Emma Ljungqvist never married.

      --

Named "Otto" because he was the eighth child of his parents.

In 1854, Samuel Otto and his brother Carl went to Norrköping.
November 1, 1854: Samuel Otto Jönsson from Östra Ryd is noted as moving into the parish Norrköping St. Olai., p. 223. His brother Carl dies in Norrköping in 1855. S.O. began using the name Ljungquist around 1859, he was a "journeyman cooper" by 1860, when he moved December 1, 1860 to Linkoping. He arrived in Linkoping on December 10, 1860., and left Linkoping ("T. 42") on July 24, 1861 for "obekant ort" ("unknown place").

He moved out from Gävle (IV Rote) bound for Stockholm on April 21, 1864 (Gävle BI:6). ("See p. 177 of household examination"). He moved into Hudiksvall, Gävleborg county, from Gävle on Nov 5, 1864. (Hudiksvall BI:4). He moved out from Hudiksvall on May 26, 1865. "Samuel Otto Jönsson Ljungquist moved to Klara, Stockholm from Hudiksvall on July 7, 1865." (BI:15).

      Hovförsamlingen Marriage records (EI:3):
