  • Notes
    • The 1923 Directory, Glace Bay (at Beaton Institute) lists Mrs. Thomas Casey, widow, h. Brookside; and her tombstone, at Edward Street Pioneer Cemetery in Glace Bay, allegedly gives year of death as 1925. However, her death certificate (Nova Scotia Civil Registration Registration Year 1920 - Book 58 - Page 270) very clearly states December 21, 1920 as the date of death. Note that the tombstone monument claims she is an improbable 99 years old. The death certificate states that she is 88 years old at time of death.

Johanna (Dunn) Casey's death certificate also states that she was the daughter of John and Margaret Dunn and was born in St. John's Newfoundland. Her son Thomas, who was about 12 when his family moved from Newfoundland to Cape Breton, was the informant. She died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay.

The author of this webpage has not been able to locate Johanna (Dunn) Casey in the 1901 census, where the exact date of birth was asked. On the 1911 census, her month and year of birth is given as August 1834. Ages on earlier census records (1871, 1881 and 1891) vary. In 1871 she is 38 (circa 1832 birth); 1881 (age 44, born abt. 1837-that would make her married at age 15) and 1891 (age 54, also suggestive of a 1837 birth). In any case she seems to have been significantly younger than her husband.

The 1853 marriage entry of Thomas Casey and Johanna Dunn at R.C. Basilica of St. John gives the home parish of Thomas Casey as Drangan, Tipperary, but does not furnish the home parish of Johanna Dunn, which implies that St. John's was her home parish. The witnesses to their marriage were James Neile and Ellen Dunn.

An extremely close inspection of the R.C. Basilica of St. John records indicates that two Johanna Dunn(e)s were baptized in St. John's at that church between 1820 and 1836:

November 23, 1830: to John Dunn and Ann (Anastasia) Williams, sponsors John Bryen and Mary Bryen (*contact the author of this website for more information on this couple; the family moved to New York City*)

August 24, 1834: to John Dunn and Margaret Kerwan, sponsors Richard Kyly (Ryly?) and Bridget Walsh [at the same time as a sister Mary Dunn]

The marriage records of R.C. Basilica of St. John indicate a marriage on 23 April 1833 of John Dunne to Margaret Kerwan, witnesses Pat Kenny and Bridget Purcel. The priest was not indicating home parishes at the time period when John and Margaret married.

The children of John Dunn and Margaret Kirwan were baptized at St. John's.

Johanna Dunn baptised 24 August 1834 sponsors Richard Kyly (Ryly?) and Bridget Walsh
Mary Dunn also baptized 24 August 1834 sponsors John Walsh and Mary Keney
Ellen Dunn 29 Aug 1836 sponsors Patrick Caring? [Canning?] and Ellen Rygan
Margaret Dunn 15 Jul 1838 sponsors Patrick Connors and Johanna Dunn
      gap-possibly caused by record loss
Patrick Dunn January 7 1844 sponsors Patrick Dunn and Mary Wolohan?
John Dunn July 19 1846 sponsors John Walton and Catherine Merigrew

Although the evidence so far supports a conclusion that Johanna (Dunn) Casey is Johanna Dunn, daughter of John Dunn and Margaret Kerwan, further research will hopefully make the connection more definitive (or refute it).
