    • "CRAIGS, in the parish of the same name, consists of the Church of Ireland, a school-house, post office, and a few other houses, including the handsomely-planted demesne (This is the old French word for domain, that portion of the lord's estate that he kept for his own use. It was often walled.) and residence of Mr. Edmund M'Neill, J.P.

      It is situated at a distance of 2½ miles north-west of Cullybackey, the nearest railway station. The land of the district is of medium quality.

      The above entry appears in "Bassett's County Antrim" by Henry George Bassett, originally published in 1888."

      According to Griffith's Valuation of 1862 (the printed version), Robert Hoey was leasing 15 acres of land at Craigs Townland, Craigs Civil Parish, Ballymena Poor Law Union, Kilconway Barony, County Antrim. For rateable purposes, the land was worth £9-15-0, the house and out-buildings £1-10-0, that making a total of £11-5-0. Craigs Civil Parish was carved out of Ahoghill Civil Parish in 1851. The printed Griffith's Valuation also shows that the lessor of the land was Henry Hugh McNeile.
