  • Notes
    • The almost nonexistant surname "Bellworth," in its most commonly found form, "Bellworthy," seems to originate in Devonshire around Exeter, possibly being a corruption of Bulkworthy, a location in North Devon near the home turf of the Ley family into which John Bellworth married. The 1881 Census of England suggests that there were less than 200 people bearing variations of the name Bellworthy in 1881.

John Bellworth was probably born in or near the Covent Garden district of London since he gave his land grant the name "Covent Garden."

John Bellworth is probably part of the family named Bellworth (this same spelling) living in Covent Garden (St. Paul Covent Garden, Westminster, Middlesex) around the time of John Bellworth's ca. 1791 birth. This is the family of John Bellworth and Sarah (Ash) Bellworth. However the search continues for a baptism of a son to this couple named John.

      Marriage bond dated 2 July 1817 (bk. 1800 p. 3958)
"John Bellworth of Sydney Cape Breton mariner & George Innes of Halifax Grocer & James Lee" are bondsmen (Was there a double wedding between John Bellworth and Mary Ley and James Ley and Mary Ann Hall?)

The following rather poor notes (in quotations) are from index cards and microfilms available at NSARM and are filed with records of the province of Nova Scotia rather than Cape Breton County or Island
