      John Tate known as "Casey" because he liked to sing the song "Casey Jones" according to the following letter to Patricia Tate, written by her grandmother Margaret (Hoy) Tate, in the possession of the author (spelling and factual errors are left intact):

      "Patricia My dear[,] grandpa['s] name was Jack Tate Casey was a nickname he used to sing Casey Jones he was born in New-Castle on Tyne 1873 he had 3 brothers 2 sisters one halfbrother one halfsister Joe and Annie Dunn Ella Walters is her only daughter his brothers names were Charley Bill Lance sisters Lewease Margaret. Nance Zollinger who sent you that coat is Margarets daughter near Chicago Betty Thorpe is Bill Tates daughter Florence Main near redford is Charleys daugther he buried twins in our cemetery whyle living here with Diptheray-Lewesa married Piercy Robson had 2 girls in New-Castle her husband was a toolmaker and went to South Afericka after the Boar war when England took it, her + 1 kids lived with us she helped me in the Druids arms for her keep Casey was able to work and we saved enough to buy a 2 family flat apt Joe Dunn was a builder and contracter Caseys father and all the boys was bricklayers + Carpendters he Joe was worth 10 thousand Pounds in 1900 later he took a partner and went bankrope 1911 Casey came out here in 1911 to my brother Bob in Delray he came back at Xms + left in Spring we sold our Flat and made a good profit I had to wait until it was all settled the 3 boys + myself booked on the Cunard liner Marentania it had won the blue ribbon for Speed-Casey told us to that they white star ships but the sailed Southampton and Liverpool was better for us thats how I missed being on the Tintae [word crossed out with TITANIC written above it] that went down with 2000 by hitting an iceberg we had a bad scare when the notice went up in our dinning room we all got we were only 1 day behind at NY we got the train 4 pm got here next night at 7 no one to meet us Bob + Casey loaked for us but it took me sometime to get up to they enterance with 31 kids traveling rigs suitcases so I boaked all my stuff and a man helped me to a street car the Condocter took me to the end of the line past my street but brought me back Bob + Jack were not home yet"
