    Notes:

On a website extant many years ago, a printout of which exists in the possession of the author, also available at Beaton Institute in their family files, claims were made that Jean George Bouteillier was "born 19 August 1691 in Etobon, Montbeliard. Christen [sic] 16 August 1692 in Etobon, Montbeliard...his godfather was Jean George Barot [sic Parrot], represented by Christopher Blancon [sic Christophe Plansson], and his godmother was Catherine Bouteillier, daughter of Lazare Bouteillier." Author has not located this baptism record (it is not in the FHL Films of Etobon church registers), but judging from census records taken of Etobon residents, the birthdate cannot be too far off. It probably comes from baptism certificates filed at Nova Scotia Archives along with the family's original emigration permit.*

    1717 census, village of Etobon
Jean Georges Bouteiller is 23, living with his mother Jeanne Mignerey (head of household), age 66, and unmarried sisters Catherine, age 27, and Jeanne, age 37. The family owns a cow.

    1718 census, village of Etobon
Jean George Bouteiller is 27, a "coupeur," [logger] living with his mother Jeanne Mignerey, 74, and unmarried sisters Catherine, age 30, and Jeanne, age 35.

    1727 census, village of Etobon
    Jean George Bouteillier, age 35
    Sara Grange age 25
    Catherine [Bouteillier] age 3
(all of the above are Lutheran in faith)

*The "emigration permit" from April of 1752 (W.P. Bell's phrase), in which Jean George Bouteiller of Etobon testifies to his poverty, Lutheranism, and desire to immigrate to the British colonies was passed down through his descendants [which line of his family inherited it needs to be added here]; the text can be read at [https://web.archive.org/web/20091022063219/http://www.geocities.com/kingboutilier/docu.html]. Witnesses listed on the document appear to all be close relatives, who are signing in support of his character: Jean Bouttaillie Ech...?[Echivan? Etobon? or an occupation?], Jean George Bouteillie ["taillandier"-J-G's nephew] Jaques Goud, Pierre Goud, Jean Christofle petit Hory, Pierre Plançon, Victoire Bugnon [Victor Emmanuel Bugnon], Jean Nicolas Mignerai, maire, and Daniel Goud, ancien.

"Jean George's emigration permit...was issued for him, his wife and four children....the five souls under his name in the ship's list...would account only for himself, wife, and three children" Register of the Foreign Protestants of Nova Scotia, by W. P. Bell (2003 reproductions of his notes). Did his sister, who was intending to emigrate (baptism certificate), also come too? Which three children are listed with J. George and Sara, as the older sons (Jean George, Jean Nicolas, and Jacques, are listed in the ships lists' independently, leaving only the youngest two, Jeanne and George Frederic; there is a "missing" passenger). There is a crossed-out baptism at Etobon of another Catherine Bouteiller, daughter of Jean George and Sara in 1726; but this potential child is not with the family on the 1727 census.

"Sally" passenger list, 30 May 1752, includes four Boutilier heads of household- Jean George Bouteillier (occupation-married), his son Jacques Bouteillier (farmer-single), his son Jean Nicolas Bouteillier (farmer-single), and also another Jacques, age "33", weaver, on the ship-relationship to the first three not known-apparently of no close relationship.

A note about sources: Family History Library films were viewed for: Etobon; Chagey; Clairegoutte; Lyoffans.
The FHL has stopped lending microfilms, and does not have the rights to digitize the French films.

The Departmental Archives of Haute-Saone has digital images of the registers, available for: Clairegoutte; Lomont; Saulnot.

Some records of Montbeliard were not filmed by the LDS. Many have been transcribed by the CEGFC (geneanet.org) or the "Servancnautes" or "Doubs Genealogie" A few are on the Municipal Archives of Montbeliard (for the town). Apparently other records are only available from the [Lutheran] Diocesan archives.

Jean married Sara Grange 19 Jan 1723, Étobon, Montbéliard now Haute-Saône, France. Sara (daughter of Pierre Grange and Anne Lévêque) was born 29 Oct 1701, Frédéric-Fontaine, Montbéliard now Haute-Saône, France; died 1752, "Sally", Atlantic Ocean. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Sara Grange was born 29 Oct 1701, Frédéric-Fontaine, Montbéliard now Haute-Saône, France (daughter of Pierre Grange and Anne Lévêque); died 1752, "Sally", Atlantic Ocean.

    • Baptism: 30 Oct 1701, Clairegoutte, Montbéliard now Haute-Saône, France

    Notes:

Baptized as Sarah Levesque. No father on the register. Baptism sponsors were Daniel Racine (son of Marc, assisted by his father) and [her aunt] Sarah Leveque of Frederic-Fontaine. Father's name omitted from register.

Sara Grange is "age 25" on the 1727 census of Etobon.

Sara Grange, "daughter of the late Pierre Grange" married Jean George Bouteiller in Etobon. The marriage record indicates that Sara was resident in Etobon at the time of the marriage. Possibly she moved there with (or to) a relative bearing a different surname, or was working as a house servant in the village.

Sara Grange was godmother to Daniel Plansson and Marguerite Boutheiller's son Jean Jacques Plansson April 25, 1720; this was three years before her marriage to Jean George Bouteillier. This suggests that Sara was already related to Daniel or Marguerite, by marriage or affinity if not by blood. For an additional relationship, see the notes page for Susanne "Marie Madeleine" Plançon.

Parents both Lutherans seemingly become Catholics (see Lutheran parish registers of Glay for Etienne and Claude; previous children born to the couple were baptized at the Catholic church in Montbeliard town)

His name is omitted from the register entries for both baptisms. His identity is only alluded to in the consistorial causes as a Roman Catholic foreigner - See notes for Anne Leveque.

Pierre Grange, while living at the Belverne (Seigneurie of Etobon, Montbeliard) mill, appears as a witness in a notarial record of Lomont (this is adjacent to the seigneurie of Etobon, in the Franche-Comté) recording a sale from Jean Gauthier to Thiebaud Morel, dated May 17, 1705 (The notary was Thiébaud Rollet)

Pierre was living in Belverne "amongst the heretics" at the time of the baptism. He was from the diocese of Clermont, parish of Saint-Romain de Val[ancher] [tight binding] (See Lyoffans parish registers 1705-1792 on FHL Film # 1,115,259) This is Saint-Romain de Valenchères.

The parish registers of Saint-Romain are viewable via the Puy-de-Dome departmental archives website (http://www.archivesdepartementales.puydedome.com/), however, most of the 17th Century register is unavailable. Pierre Grange (the Auvergnat in Montbeliard) was a married man from Les Gouttes Saint Romain (according to Saulnot parish registers), and speculatively, was the same Pierre Grange of Les Gouttes who was the son of Andre Grange, and who was married a woman named Anthoinette Faidix (name variously spelled) in 1689 (assuming Pierre was in his early twenties at marriage); André Grange, a son of Pierre and Antoinette, was baptized at Saint Romain on 27 April 1693. Antoinette died in Saint Romain in 1726.

There was a Pierre Grange born around 1708 who lived in Champey, Montbéliard, and was the spouse of Marguerite Lods. Pierre Grange was married to Marguerite Lods at Tremoins, Montbéliard (Lutheran) in 1734, the couple used the Lutheran church at Champey to baptize their children, and Pierre was buried at Champey (Lutheran) "age 71" in 1779. Although Anne Levesque had a Peny cousin in Champey (Sara Peny) who was her father's goddaughter, it is more likely that Pierre Grange of Champey was Pierre Grange of Auvergne's child from another relationship. A Francoise Pacoton or Paccoton, from Switzerland, had a child out of wedlock named Pierre baptized at Tremoins (Lutheran) on January 9, 1707. The father is not named on the register. Pierre Lods was the godfather. Francoise Paccoton died and was buried at Etobon in 1742, as the wife of Jacques Gisclon (he died at Etobon 1735).

Pierre Grange died in 1722 at his girlfriend Sybille Valley's house in Champey (after, according to her testimony, receiving Extreme Unction) and was buried in Saulnot.

Pierre Grange is named in the parish register of Etobon, as the bride's late father in the marriage record of Sara Grange to Jean George Bouteiller.

"Anne de Frédéric-Fontaine (son nom n'est pas donné) déjà condamnée en 1704 pour paillardise, l'était à nouveau pour avoir 'réitéré avec un étranger de la religion catholique romaine'"
from "Frédéric-Fontaine, le Pays du Réfuge" by Pierre Croissant, citing article "Causes Consistoriales" in "Mémoires de Société d'émulation de Doubs," year 1965, p. XLVIII
(the above "Anne" is Anne Levesque and her daughter Madeleine is the "nouveau")

Anne's burial record indicates that Anne died in the Comté de Burgogne (aka Franche-Comté) [in "Esenans"(sic) ; perhaps Esnans, Doubs- near Baume- les-Dames- on the Doubs between Montbéliard and Besançon], where she was a beggar (possibly she was begging on the roadside). Her two daughters were both living at the time of her death.
register Clairegoutte reads: "La défunte mourut à Esenans village du comté de Bourgogne où elle s'était rencontrée avec ses 2 jeunes filles pour mendier"
Anne may have been formally banished from Montbeliard, a process involving the pillory and lashes. See notes for Sybille Vallet, a later girlfriend of Pierre Grange.
