Brown, John Johnston, and Thomas Casey, Overmen, were the first to go in search of the others and found that there was an explosion, and discovered all the bodies, but that of Donald Martin, whose body was not recovered until the 26th, ten days afterwards. When found they were in two groups, about fifty feet apart. Donald Martin's body was recovered in a sitting position leaning against the coal in No. 2 level about ninety feet from the others. It was quite evident that they died from after-damp, as some of them were found with coats around their faces...."

They paid many visits. Mr. Casey says the poet Longfellow was one of the principal shareholders, and visited here on one or two occasions. Henry S. Poole, an English engineer, was the first general manager, taking charge in 1865 and continued until 1871, when he retired."

Thomas Casey, 91, dies at Glace Bay
"Glace Bay, February 4-The many friends and relatives of Thomas Casey, widely known and respected resident of this community will learn with deep regret of his death at his residence at an early hour this morning. OPERATES FIRST PHONE The deceased was 91 years of age and enjoyed good health up until a few days ago when he became ill, and passed away. A native of Newfoundland Mr. Casey came to Glace Bay 78 years ago. He was the first man to operate a winch in Caledonia Colliery, and he was also the first to speak through a telephone in the same colliery. He was promoted to underground manager and later on to Coal Inspector and remained as such until his retirement 15 years ago. He then devoted his time to issuing Miner's Papers. Mr. Casey has also been treasurer of the League of the Cross for the past 55 years. MEMBERS OF FAMILY He is survived by one brother, Pat, residing in Glace Bay, and four daughters. They are Mrs. James Leslie in Glace Bay, Mrs. Catherine Scofield, Mrs. Johanna Ryan and Mrs. Bella Dalton in Boston. The late Mr. Casey is also survived by 23 grand children and 9 great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete and will be announced pending the arrival of his daughter Mrs. Bella Dalton from Boston. The funeral is under the direction of Curry's Funeral Service. "

"Four Cape Bretoners Spent 225 Years At Mines in Bay District - One of Quartet Has Passed Away - Others Hale and Hearty and Enjoying Retirement - Glace Bay,Jan. 24. The Records of the Besco Pension Fund disclose a number of instances of men who though well up in years and retired on pension after, in most cases, a period of years equal to the average man's lifetime engaged in the strenuous work of coal mining, retain wonderful physical vigor....Thomas Casey, Sr. Another well-known old timer of the Glace Bay mining district is Thomas Casey, senior, of Caledonia Mines. Mr. Casey was born June, 1856. He went to work at Caledonia in 1867 and spent all his working life employed at that mine, working up from trapper boy to underground manager. From 1889 he held responsible official positions, first as overman, then as underground manager, and latterly as coal inspector, until he was retired on pension in 1924, after 57 years service. Mr. Casey has seen Glace Bay grow from a small mining village to the "Biggest Town" in Canada, and during his long life has become one of the most respected citizens of the town. He has been a member of the board of St. Joseph's hospital ever since the hospital was founded and several times in the early years of the town after incorporation he refused pressing requests to allow himself to be nominated for the town council. One of his sons, the late "Jack" Casey, one of the most popular and successful mining men in Cape Breton, who died suddenly a few years ago, followed in his father's footsteps by working up from a driver boy in Caledonia mine to become manager of the colliery." "Catharine McDonald" is 20 years old on the 1871 Census of Canada (she is living with her family, household 92, page 33 Mabou District 1, line 1.) She may have been born in 1851 rather than 1855; this would make her a couple of years older than her husband, however, not too old to have her final child in 1892. She provides the age of 20 years on the 1875 civil registration of her marriage, however.

Excerpts from some Casey-related entries in St. Ann's parish records that are "problematic":

Thomas married Johanna Dunn/Dunne 16 Jan 1853, Basilica of St. John, St. John's, Newfoundland. Johanna (daughter of John Dunn/Dunne and Margaret Kirwan) was born Aug 1834, St. John's, Newfoundland; was christened 24 Aug 1834, Basilica of St. John, St. John's, Newfoundland; died 21 Dec 1920, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; was buried 24 Dec 1920, St. Anne's/First Catholic Cemetery of Glace Bay, King Edward St.. Notes:

The 1923 Directory, Glace Bay (at Beaton Institute) lists Mrs. Thomas Casey, widow, h. Brookside; and her tombstone, at Edward Street Pioneer Cemetery in Glace Bay, allegedly gives year of death as 1925. However, her death certificate (Nova Scotia Civil Registration Registration Year 1920 - Book 58 - Page 270) very clearly states December 21, 1920 as the date of death. Note that the tombstone monument claims she is an improbable 99 years old. The death certificate states that she is 88 years old at time of death.

Johanna (Dunn) Casey's death certificate also states that she was the daughter of John and Margaret Dunn and was born in St. John's Newfoundland. Her son Thomas, who was about 12 when his family moved from Newfoundland to Cape Breton, was the informant. She died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay.

The author of this webpage has not been able to locate Johanna (Dunn) Casey in the 1901 census, where the exact date of birth was asked. On the 1911 census, her month and year of birth is given as August 1834. Ages on earlier census records (1871, 1881 and 1891) vary. In 1871 she is 38 (circa 1832 birth); 1881 (age 44, born abt. 1837-that would make her married at age 15) and 1891 (age 54, also suggestive of a 1837 birth). In any case she seems to have been significantly younger than her husband.

The 1853 marriage entry of Thomas Casey and Johanna Dunn at R.C. Basilica of St. John gives the home parish of Thomas Casey as Drangan, Tipperary, but does not furnish the home parish of Johanna Dunn, which implies that St. John's was her home parish. The witnesses to their marriage were James Neile and Ellen Dunn.

An extremely close inspection of the R.C. Basilica of St. John records indicates that two Johanna Dunn(e)s were baptized in St. John's at that church between 1820 and 1836:

November 23, 1830: to John Dunn and Ann (Anastasia) Williams, sponsors John Bryen and Mary Bryen (*contact the author of this website for more information on this couple; the family moved to New York City*)

August 24, 1834: to John Dunn and Margaret Kerwan, sponsors Richard Kyly (Ryly?) and Bridget Walsh [at the same time as a sister Mary Dunn]

The marriage records of R.C. Basilica of St. John indicate a marriage on 23 April 1833 of John Dunne to Margaret Kerwan, witnesses Pat Kenny and Bridget Purcel. The priest was not indicating home parishes at the time period when John and Margaret married.

The children of John Dunn and Margaret Kirwan were baptized at St. John's.

Johanna Dunn baptised 24 August 1834 sponsors Richard Kyly (Ryly?) and Bridget Walsh
Mary Dunn also baptized 24 August 1834 sponsors John Walsh and Mary Keney
Ellen Dunn 29 Aug 1836 sponsors Patrick Caring? [Canning?] and Ellen Rygan
Margaret Dunn 15 Jul 1838 sponsors Patrick Connors and Johanna Dunn
    gap-possibly caused by record loss
Patrick Dunn January 7 1844 sponsors Patrick Dunn and Mary Wolohan?
John Dunn July 19 1846 sponsors John Walton and Catherine Merigrew
